Born in Tifton, Dr. Smith was the son of Dr. William Thomas Smith and Maud Burns, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his wife, the former Cecilia Darracott Travis, whom he married in 1942, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Savannah.
Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and from Atlanta Southern, later Emory, Dental School.
During World War II, Dr. Smith served as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. After the war, he and his family lived in Tifton, where he practiced dentistry for 36 years. Mr. Smith was president of the Georgia Dental Association and the Georgia State Board of Dental Examiners. During this time, he created the preceptorship program for dental hygienists. Dr. Smith was selected as a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry and of the International College of Dentistry, and was a charter member of the Georgia Academy of Dental Practitioners. He was a founder of the Society for the Preservation of Oral Health.
Dr. Smith also served as district chairman of Chehaw Council, Boy Scouts of America and received Scouting’s Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society of the University of Georgia.
In Tifton, Dr. Smith was a member of First Methodist Church. Active in civic affairs, he served as president of the Tifton Lions Club, the Tifton Country Club and the Tifton Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club. An avid golfer, Dr. Smith was club champion of Tifton’s Country Club in 1948, and senior champion at the Landings on Skidaway Island.
He and his wife had resided in Chatham County since 1989, where he was an active member of Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Smith is survived by six children, Col. Gordon B. Smith of Savannah, Dr. Bruce A. Smith, Dr. Christopher C. Smith and Judge Nancy S. Stephenson, all of Albany, Dr. L. Travis Smith of Tifton, and Dr. Cecilia S. McKay of Chapel Hill, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
